PRINCESS MATHILDE NOEL LIBRARY Léger and BOULABERT. Le Siège de Sébastopol et la paix, historical poem. Paris, Dentu, 1856, in-8 (242 x 158 mm) of 192 pp, contemporary red chagrin binding, framed with eight gilt and cold filets, fleurons at the corners, initial M gilt in an ermine mantle under closed crown, spine decorated with nerves, interior roulette, gilt edges. First edition printed in a small number. The work, dedicated to the empress Eugenie in rather pompous verses, sings the praise of Saint-Arnaud, Canrobert and the soldiers who died for the fatherland - Otto Lorenz, III, 590. Mathilde Laetitia BONAPARTE DEMIDOFF known as Princess MATHILDE (1820-1904) Daughter of King Jerome and his second wife, Catherine of Wurtemberg, Princess Mathilde was initially destined for Louis-Napoleon, the future Napoleon III, but her father broke off the engagement after the Strasbourg adventure. She finally married Prince Anatole Demidoff in 1840. They separated five years later and she lived in Paris with her imperial cousin. Refined and literate, she had built up an important and beautiful library and received in her salon all that counted in the world of arts and letters.
