ITALIAN SCHOOL circa 1280-1300, Bologna ?, Padua ?, Two leaves from a Missal. In Latin, illuminated leaves with historiated and decorated initials. Text on two columns, liturgical round script (littera bononiensis), dark brown ink, rubrics in red ink, gouache and burnished gold Dimensions : (I) 243 x 365 mm , (II) 242 x 364 mm. These two leaves are taken from an Italian missal: the rubrics "Grad." for "Graduale", a gradual psalm sung between the readings of the epistle and the gospel, are noted. The rounded liturgical writing is clearly Italian. On the first leaf, there are three historiated initials, depicting two figures holding books (prophets?) and the head of a figure wearing a mitre (bishop?). The decoration of this folio is completed by an ornate initial and an initial decorated with a head/drill. In the second folio, a similar decoration with a historiated initial (figure holding a book, prophet?) At the end of the 13th century, Bologna was the largest city in Italy and the fifth largest city in Europe, even larger than Paris. The oldest university in Europe was located here, and for the next two centuries Bologna enjoyed a period of great prosperity - in culture and the arts, in its religious foundations, in commerce and civic activities. Many scriptoria were located there, specializing in law manuscripts but also beautiful liturgical manuscripts. Provenance : Collection of Jean-Joseph Marquet de Vasselot (1871-1946), curator at the Louvre Museum and then Director of the Cluny Museum, art historian specialized in art objects, especially goldsmiths and enamels from Limousin, about which he published many articles.
