ORIGINAL AND FINE PANEL OF TAPESTRY OF AUBUSSON... - Lot 153 - Osenat
ORIGINAL AND FINE PANEL OF TAPESTRY OF AUBUSSON (FRANCE) MID EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. Armide after the opera Renaud et Armide (carton by Charles Antoine Coypel). In wool and silk. Armide is the last tragedy in music (in five acts and a prologue) completed by Jean-Baptiste Lully. It was composed in 1686 to a libretto by Philippe Quinault and is often considered as the masterpiece of both artists. It is a character of the Jerusalem delivered of the Italian poet Le Tasse (Muslim magician). In the foreground, the crusader Renaud embracing an angel, and on the left Armide. Although they are enemies, Armide falls in love with him, and then tries in vain to hold him by enchantments. 230 x 185 cm
