FROM THE COLLECTION OF PRINCE VICTOR Rare flag model 1804, used by the guard of honor of the City of Niort during the visit of the Emperor I. Made of painted silk and richly embellished with gold, decorated on both sides with a central white diamond bordered with laurel leaves. The corners are red and charged with a blue medallion decorated with a bee. The central rhombus of the obverse is marked in gold letter " LA VILLE DE NIORT A LA GARDE D'HONNEUR ", that of the obverse is decorated with the figure of the Emperor Napoleon under imperial crown. 66 x 66 cm. Small discolorations due to its exposure. Presented in a gilded iron wall frame, under a biface glass. B.E. First Empire period, around 1808. Provenance : -M.Cuneo d'Ornano collection. -Offered to Prince Victor Napoleon, then descent. -Private collection. History: In Niort, a guard of honor was formed in 1808 to escort the Emperor on his return from Spain. The flag of this guard was acquired by M.Cuneo d'Ornano, a former cavalry officer who donated it in 1907 to Prince Victor Napoleon. A booklet published in 1895 by Mr. Cuneo d'Ornano reproduces the flag and gives the relation of the blessing of which it was the object on July 17, 1808 in the church of Notre Dame de Niort. The cavalry company of the honor guard was commanded by M. de Sainte Hermine. The infantry was commanded by Captain Rouget de Gourcez Bibliography: Two articles in the magazines "Le Briquet" and "Le Bivouac" are devoted to this standard.
