JEAN-URBAIN GUERIN (1761-1836) Bernadotte, Charles XIV, King of Sweden and Norway (1763-1844) Black pencil and blush drawing heightened with white. Oval view : H. 20 x 17 cm Titled passe-partout : H. 35,5 x 28 cm The print made from this drawing and deposited at the Bibliothèque Nationale on 15 Ventôse year 6 [5 March 1798], is part of the beginning of the series : " Collection des portraits des généraux qui se sont le plus distingués dans les guerres de la république française " engraved by Fiesinger. This portrait was made in Paris under the Directory, in 1797-1798, when Bernadotte returned from the Italian campaign (August 1797), before his departure for the embassy in Vienna (February 1798). This young general Bernadotte is at the beginning of his career. This is one of his first portraits. He is depicted with a mane of long scattered hair, the long busted nose, the black tie carelessly tied.
