ERNEST MEISSONIER (1815-1891). FRENCH SCHOOL.... - Lot 75 - Osenat
ERNEST MEISSONIER (1815-1891). FRENCH SCHOOL. "The Sentry" in profile. Indian ink drawing monogrammed in the lower left corner. 17.5 x 6 cm. Under glass. Jean-Louis Ernest MEISSONIER French painter (Lyon 1815-Paris 1891). He first illustrated himself with success in genre scenes inspired by the small Dutch masters (the Reader, 1857, Louvre). Then he tried his hand at history painting (Napoleon III at the Battle of Solferino, 1863, Musée d'Orsay). Forgetting the precision that he applied to his paintings of people in 18th century costume, he also knew how to translate an emotion (the Barricade, 1848-1850, Louvre), or even an epic impulse, as when he sang the praises of the Napoleonic epic (1814, 1864, Musée d'Orsay).
