110. BONAPARTE (Joseph). Autograph letter signed "Joseph", addressed to the countess Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, Laure Guesnon de Bonneuil. London, May 9, 1835. 3 pp. in-12. « ... Your reflections are sad truths, the world is like that, the noble feelings seem to be exceptions, what is the use of lights, if the most IGNORANT classes are actually the most noble, and the most concerned with public interests! You may tell me that they serve to discern virtue wherever it may be found, in the individual exceptions of the privileged classes, and in the whole classes of the rest of the population, which are not ceaselessly combated, by a particular interest, which leaves them with the feeling, the instinct of the public good, the discernment of the heart, which makes the people, the masses, such good judges of these true friends, and leaves to the charlatans, to the political frippery only a populace of few moments: THE MOST HABILITATED INTRIGUESTS ARE IN THE LONG run ONLY PIEGES THAT THE POLITICAL EMPIRIES HOLD FOR THEMSELVES, ALSO THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE IS THE VOICE OF GOD, it is as infallible as he. So we shall live long enough, perhaps, to see all that goes on in the House of Peers withered, mon[s]tre trials, monstrous demands for money, mon[s]tru[e]ry gathering of an army around the capital, &c., all these tricks of the trade will appear in the eyes of the people, sooner or later, for what they are... But I will do much better to return to the exceptions, and to take pleasure in the gratitude I owe you for the noble sentiments you have not ceased to show me for so long, and which the injustice of fortune seems to increase still further. Accept the homage of my life[i]lle and tender friendship...
