106. BONAPARTE (Jérôme). 3 autograph letters signed "Jérôme" - Lot 106
106. BONAPARTE (Jérôme). 3 autograph letters signed "Jérôme" to the countess Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, Laure Guesnon de Bonneuil. 1848-1851 - [Paris], 15 August 1848. "My dear Countess, I found it impossible to answer your little note, which I hasten to do this morning in the fear that my verbal answer has not been transmitted to you exactly. I CANNOT GO TODAY TO THE INVALIDS [FOR THE CELEBRATION OF SAINT NAPOLEON], for very good reasons, but my son will be there: if after mass you want to come to my house, I will see you there with pleasure as always... " - Paris, "this 13th evening" [between 1848 and 1852]. "Two words, dear Countess, to tell you that YOU CANNOT THINK FOR A SINGLE INSTANCE THAT THE EMPEROR'S LAST BROTHER COULD FORGET, & YOUR DEVOUTNESS, AND YOUR CONSTANT ATTACHMENT TO EVERYTHING THAT BELONGS TO HER. So don't blame the fact that I have been deprived of the pleasure of seeing you, except for the occupations which have surprised me in the middle of my retreat from which I have had to leave. You would be well advised to come and ask me to dinner tomorrow at half past six: I will send the carriage to pick you up & have you driven home..." (on printed letterhead "Hôtel des Invalides. Cabinet du gouverneur"). - Château de Gourdez [in Morancez, Eure-et-Loir], near Chartres, 4 July 1851. « ... I regret very much, dear Countess, that your health has been impaired, people like you should always be happy, especially WHEN THE NAME WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE OBJECT OF YOUR DEVOUR IS SO MIRACULOUSLY RETURNING TO POWER IN OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!!! If it depended on me, dear countess, you would have nothing to desire, but alas I am like a man who is no longer of this world, and in truth when one sees all that happens in it, it is not to be regretted..."
