84. ROEDERER (Pierre-Louis). Œuvres. Paris, typography of Fi - Lot 84
84. ROEDERER (Pierre-Louis). Œuvres. Paris, typography of Firmin Didot frères, 1853-1859. 8 volumes large in-8, half red basane, spines threaded, covers preserved, snags on last ff. of vol. VII (modern binding). FIRST EDITION OUT OF TRADE, INTENDED FOR THE IMMEDIATE FAMILY. A supplementary volume of tables, planned, never saw the light of day. INFLUENCED POLITICAL MAN, PUBLICIST AND WRITER, PIERRE-LOUIS ROEDERER (1754-1835) was linked with Mirabaud, Sieyès and Talleyrand, played an important role during the coup d'état of the Dix-huit brumaire, was made senator, and was employed in foreign missions, for instance as minister of finance of king Joseph in Naples or as minister secretary of state of the grand duchy of Berg. THE PRESENT WORK INCLUDES HIS JOURNAL, "OF THE FIRST ORDER" according to Jean Tulard who specifies: "Daily notes for the writing of memoirs, between 1799 and 1806, by one of the most influential figures of the new regime. Roederer faithfully reports Bonaparte's words on the internal affairs of the Consulate: plots, institutions, assemblies. One will also find precious information on the kingdom of Naples, Spain and the senatorial district of Caen" (Nouvelle bibliographie critique des mémoires sur l'époque napoléonienne, Paris, Droz, 1991, n° 1265). This diary, which occupies here the whole of volume III and the first half of volume IV, would not know its first edition in bookshops until 1909. There are also other memorial texts and correspondence received here, notably from King Joseph and his wife Julie Clary. Pierre-Louis Roederer's political criticism and essays, reports, speeches and libels fill the second half of volume IV, volumes V to VII, and a large part of volume VIII. 12 leaves of plates out of text, i.e.: one copperplate engraved leaf and 11 lithographed leaves, 5 of which are facsimiles (2 fold-outs, one double-page, one recto-verso and one single).
