63. MURAT (Joachim). Letter signed "Joachim", addressed to the Secretary of State of the Imperial Family Michel-Louis-Étienne Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély, with a short autograph apostille of the latter. Benrath Castle [in Düsseldorf], 14 August 1806. 1 p. in-folio.LETTER WRITTEN SHORTLY AFTER PRUSSIA'S DECLARATION OF WAR TO FRANCE on 9 August 1806. "Mr. State Councillor, I am extremely sensitive to all the obliging care which you want to take for all that interests me, and I do not know how to express my gratitude to you. I am pleased to adopt the arrangements you have made for my nephew, and I think it is very good that Mr. Campan shares the lessons which Mr. Perreau, whose merit I have known for a long time, will be kind enough to give him. I intend to write to this esteemed jurisconsult to thank him for his kindness and his trouble...". This is the jurist Jean-André Perreau, professor of law, publicist, who presided over the Tribunate, and Madame Campan's son, Henri, who had just been appointed auditor to the Council of State in March 1806. MURAT GRAND DUKE OF BERG. Seeking to contain the power of Prussia and to close northern Germany to English trade, Napoleon I placed his brother-in-law Marshal Murat at the head of the Grand Duchy of Berg (and the Duchy of Cleves), a principality with its capital at Düsseldorf, on 15 March 1806. When Joachim Murat was made King of Naples in 1808, the sovereignty over the Grand Duchy of Berg and the Duchy of Cleves would revert to the Emperor.
