Rue de Bussy n° 15 HEAD OF COLLECTION OF THIS SUCCESSFUL PERIODICAL PUBLICATION which was subscribed to monthly until 1814, forming a total of 21 volumes - the collections are rarely complete. The first 3 volumes are here in the second edition. This was the fourth major publishing venture on this model, after the Causes célèbres et intéressantes by François Gayot de Pitaval (1734-1743, 20 volumes), the Continuation des causes célèbres et intéressantes by Jean-Claude de La Ville (1766-1769, 4 volumes) and the Causes célèbres et intéressantes de toutes les Cours souveraines du royaume by Nicolas-Toussaint Le Moyne dit Des Essarts (1773-1789, 195 volumes). BROTHER OF THE PERSONAL SECRETARY OF THE VICE-KING OF ITALY EUGENE DE BEAUHARNAIS Étienne Méjan, Maurice Mejan made a judicial career and practised then as a lawyer at the Court of Cassation and at the Council of holds. He was however one of the committed voices of the legitimism after the fall of the Empire. A SENSATIONAL JUDICIAL CHRONICLE, OR A PICTURE OF FRENCH SOCIETY THROUGH ITS VICES AND FANTASIES. Maurice Méjean offers here a selection of contemporary cases that made headlines during the Revolution, the Consulate and the Empire: poisoning, infanticide, "accusations of sorcery", forgery, nullity of a marriage contracted in Russia, cases of morality, the inheritance of General Faultier de L'Orme who had married a Georgian woman in Egypt, the assassination of Gustav III of Sweden, etc. Some of the cases mentioned are older but had not been the subject of notices in previous collections of Causes célèbres, such as the affair of the necklace (swindle of which the Cardinal de Rohan was the victim, believing he was acting for the benefit of Queen Marie-Antoinette) or the Kornmann affair (adulterous woman locked up under a letter of seal, defended by Beaumarchais). EXAMPLE WITH THE ARMS OF NAPOLEON I AS KING OF ITALY (iron missing from OHR plate n° 2675). SUPERB GOLD MOROCCO BY THE PARISIAN BOOKBINDER FREDERIC-GUILLAUME ROSA. Provenance: library of General Jean-Louis Du Temple de Rougemont (ex-libris leather).
