57. JOSÉPHINE (Empress). Letter signed "joséphine", addressed to the Secretary of State of the Imperial Family Michel-Louis-Étienne Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély. Château de Navarre [near Évreux, in the Eure], 28 January 1811. 3/4 p. in-4. "According to the COMMITMENT THAT I HAVE TAKEN TO HOLD ON THE FOUNDATIONS [BAPTISMAUX], WITH THE PRINCE OF NEUCHATEL [THE MARSHAL LOUIS-ALEXANDRE BERTHIER] THE CHILD OF WHICH MAD[AM]E POURTALES HAS BEEN DELIVERED LATER, you promised me at Malmaison to transmit to me the necessary power of attorney to make me deputise in this ceremony. We are only waiting for this act, and you will be pleased to send it to me, or to let me know if I can instruct a notary to draw up this power of attorney. I am pleased to take advantage of this circumstance to renew the assurance of the feelings you know I have for you..." Sophie de Guy d'Audanger was the wife of the Swiss State Councillor Louis de Pourtalès (from a wealthy family of French Protestants settled in Neuchâtel), and had given birth to Alexandre-Joseph, a future Neuchâtel officer in the Prussian service. To keep her away from Paris after their divorce, Napoleon I gave Josephine the use of the Château de Navarre, which was built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and was destroyed in the 19th century. JOINT, 3 pieces. - REGNAUD DE SAINT-JEAN D'ANGELY (Michel-Louis-Étienne). Handwritten minute of his answer to Joséphine. Paris, February 6, 1811. "I think that Your Majesty, to make herself substitute as godmother of the child which she must hold with His Serene Highness the prince of Neuchâtel, needs only to give a power of His hand authorizing the person whom the prince of Neuchâtel will designate to represent Your Majesty at the ceremony and to confer to the child the names which she will want to designate to the aforementioned power of attorney..." - DESCHAMPS (Jacques-Marie). Autograph letter signed as secretary of the commands of the empress Joséphine. Castle of Navarre, February 18, 1811. "The Empress Joséphine charges me to have the honor of transmitting to you a power of attorney from her hand to authorize Mad[am]e de Montmollin-Meuron to replace her as godmother of the child of Mr. de Pourtalès..." - JOSEPHINE (Empress). Handwritten document. February 1811. Copy of Josephine's power of attorney (February 18, 1811) and of the apostille that Count Regnaud de Saint-Jean d'Angély affixed to it (February 22, 1811).
