51. ELBE (island of). - BRIOT (Pierre-Joseph). Piece signed - Lot 51
51. ELBE (island of). - BRIOT (Pierre-Joseph). Piece signed with some autograph corrections, as Government Commissioner to the island of Elba, entitled "Some notes on the statistics of the island of Elba, and the organization that it would be appropriate to give it". [Probably 1802]. 27 pp. 1/4 in-folio. TABLE CIRCUMSTANCIE DE L'ILE D'ELBE, including a geographical description commune by commune, a presentation of the agricultural, industrial and maritime activities, an analysis of the military position, as well as the existing judicial and fiscal systems. Pierre-Joseph Briot then proposes a complete project of civil and military organization. Placed following the landing corps that took possession of the island of Elba at the beginning of 1801, as secretary to commander Mariotti, Pierre-Joseph Briot was then appointed general commissioner of the government on the island in April 1802. He could not get along with the military governor, whom he found too brutal with the population, and he offered his resignation, but as it was refused, he came to France and obtained the dismissal of the general. PIERRE-JOSEPH BRIOT (1771-1827), a former deputy in the Conseil des Cinq-Cents, was one of the most hostile republicans to the Eighteenth of Brumaire, and was immediately excluded from the National Assembly. However, thanks to the kindness of Lucien Bonaparte, he escaped deportation to Guyana, and was made secretary general of the Doubs prefecture (his native country) in 1800, then, therefore, government commissioner on the island of Elba. Under the Empire, he left for Naples and placed himself in the service of the kings Joseph Bonaparte and then Joachim Murat (who made him a State Councillor), but he returned to Franche-Comté when the latter turned against France. Joined, 2 other handwritten pieces: "Note sur l'isle d'Elbe et ses mines" (6 pp. 1/4 in-4), and "Description topographique de l'isle d'Elbe" (6 pp. 2/3 in-folio).
