41. BONNART (Médard). History of Médard Bonnart. At Épernai, chez Mme v[euv]e Fiévet, 1828. 2 volumes in-8, (4)-ii-485-(1 blank) + (4)-520 pp. half calf with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with black title-pieces, gilt heads on witnesses, a few stains on the bindings (late 19th century binding). FIRST EDITION. Illustrated with 4 portraits (one engraved on copper by Alexandre Chaponnier and 3 lithographed by the Delpech workshop), 2 lithographed facsimiles and 12 lithographed plates of uniforms. "Bonnart joined the National Guard of his native town of Damery, near Épernay, in 1791 and took part in all the campaigns of the Revolution. In 1800, he was assigned to the gendarmerie. From 1812 to 1814, he served in Spain, where he fought against guerrillas and the English. Volume 2 of his memoirs is devoted to Bonnart's services in Maine-et-Loire from 1800 to 1818, to his retirement with the rank of captain" (Jean Tulard, Nouvelle bibliographie critique des mémoires sur l'époque napoléonienne, Paris, Droz, 1991, n° 181).
