MANUFACTURE OF SEVRES Jean Baptiste CARPEAUX,... - Lot 615 - Osenat
MANUFACTURE OF SEVRES Jean Baptiste CARPEAUX, after the Imperial Prince Bust in Sèvres biscuit, on a pedestal engraved on the side : " B. CARPEAUX " Height : 32 cm - Width : 20 cm Stamps in hollow of SEVRES - S 1912 and initials PF History: At the end of November 1864, Carpeaux wrote to the Marquis de Piennes: "I had, as you know, been commissioned by the Emperor to make, not the bust of the Imperial Prince as I had expressed my desire to H.M., but the full-length statue..." The Empress preferred a bust, the Emperor a full-length statue. Both were ordered at the same time. The first version of this bust of the Imperial Prince was sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux in 1865 and exhibited at the 1867 Salon. This copy was cast by Eugène Debord in 1870, the pedestal by Charles Maldémé at the same date. Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) was a famous official sculptor of the Second Empire, close to the imperial family, and many of his works are in the Musée d'Orsay.
