RARE TELEGRAM ANNOUNCING THE DISCOVERY OF... - Lot 599 - Osenat
RARE TELEGRAM ANNOUNCING THE DISCOVERY OF THE BODY OF THE IMPERIAL PRINCE. Headed "NATAL GOVERNMENT TELEGRAPHS" Sent by the Attorney General of Pietermaritzburg to Captain BAYNTON, head of the Durban Message and Telegraph Company at 10 o'clock in the evening (probably 2 June 1879, the day the body of the young Prince was found). "Prince Imperials body recovered pierced with assejai wounds clothes ans all effects removed by natives " With its envelope addressed to Captain Baynton annotated in pencil " Private + Confidential " The whole presented framed under glass with a representation of the Prince. 53 x 37 cm. Presented framed. B.E. Provenance: UHLMANN Collection. Captain BAYNTON had accommodated the Imperial Prince in Durban shortly before his death. We know that Uhlmann and Delage also stayed in Durban while the Prince was dying and that they were in contact with Baynton. The Empress Eugenie, when she visited the place where her son was staying before his death, also met the Captain. Captain Molyneux's report on the discovery of the body on June 2, 1879, is quoted: "I accompanied this morning the cavalry commanded by Major-General Marshall to find the body of S.A.I. The scouts of the flying column under Brigadier-General Wood joined us on our left, and together we searched around the kraal. We soon made the discovery of the bodies of the two soldiers of the Natal cavalry. At nine o'clock Captain [actually Private] Cochrane called my attention and that of Surgeon Major Scott to another body at the bottom of a donga, which on examination was recognized as that of His Highness."
