DUC DE MORNY Large collection of letters... - Lot 590 - Osenat
DUC DE MORNY Large collection of letters and telegrams of condolence sent to his wife Sophie. A folio volume containing nearly 85 letters and telegrams to the Duchess. Inside in green moire. Bound in plum morocco with three silver-plated brass clasps (clasps missing). Spine with nerves. A.B.E. Provenance: Roland Bonaparte's private residence. History: Roland Bonaparte (1858-1924), a French prince and grandson of Lucien Bonaparte, received a colossal fortune upon the death of his wife Marie-Félix Blanc, heiress of François Blanc, the wealthy founder of the Monte Carlo Casino. The couple had a daughter, the famous disciple of Sigmund Freud, Marie Bonaparte. In 1892, Prince Roland commissioned the architect Ernest Janty to build a private mansion at 10 avenue d'Iéna on the hill of Chaillot. The latter allowed him to lead a social life in keeping with his rank as a descendant of the Emperor Napoleon I and to serve as a showcase for his library and his collections dedicated to his passions: Napoleonic memorabilia, cartography, geography and natural sciences. To satisfy his dynastic pretensions, he chose to stage his filiation with the emperor, through an interior decoration constantly recalling the imperial epic. Amongst the most impressive rooms, the ceremonial dining room is a summit in the evocation of the Emperor. Recently renovated to house the luxury hotel "Shangri-La", the residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte still shows vestiges of the decoration ordered by his illustrious patron.
