VIGNOLE (Giacomo Barozzio da Vignola, known... - Lot 11 - Osenat
VIGNOLE (Giacomo Barozzio da Vignola, known as Le). Li Cinque ordini di architettura. In Venezia nel negotio Remondini, [second half of the 17th century]. In-folio, 42 (out of 43) engraved ff. , signatures A-D8 and E10 , half parchment , very worn binding with paper cover almost entirely torn off , last plate missing (old binding). New edition of the plates from the edition published in Venice by Giacomo Franco in 1603: the Remondini bookshop has not kept the privilege plate nor the printed dedication (which explains the jump in foliation), nor the printed text leaves by Ottaviano Ridolfi, but has added 3 plates engraved by Juan Dolivar representing Bernini's works in Saint Peter's in Rome. That is, here: a title with portrait (not folioed), 30 plates on architectural orders (the first not folioed, the following folioed IIII to XXXII), and 11 plates not folioed (8 on the ornamentation of porticoes, one on the ornamentation of a mantelpiece, and 2 representations of Bernini's works (the baldachin, and the reliquary of St. Peter's pulpit) - without the third additional plate. Fowler's proposed edition date of c. 1648 (pp. 290-291, no. 363) seems difficult to maintain if the additional plates are taken into consideration: the engraver Juan Dolivar lived from 1641 to 1692, the reliquary of St. Peter's pulpit was inaugurated in 1666, the founder of the Remondini firm, Giovanni-Antonio, began his activity in 1657, and this Bassano firm only gained a foothold in Venice in 1750.
