LEPAUTE (Jean-André). Traité d'horlogerie containing all that is necessary to know well and to regulate the clocks and the watches. In Paris, by Jacques Chardon, Jacques-Charles Chardon, 1755. In-4, (4)-xxviii-308 [with numbering errors between pp. 93 and 104]-xxxv-(1) pp, pages xxv to xxviii erroneously bound between pp. 306 and 307, marbled brown calf, spine ribbed with partitions and fleurons with garnet title-piece, triple gilt fillet on covers with gilt coat of arms in centre, filleted edges, edges red, binding a little worn with small lacks on the headpieces, margins of several plates worn and sometimes slightly frayed (contemporary binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, dedicated by the author, the king's watchmaker, to the marquis de Marigny, brother of the marquise de Pompadour, who was director and general organizer of the king's buildings, gardens, arts, academies and royal manufactures. ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER: 17 folding plates out of text. Copy bearing the arms of the Marquise de Pompadour on the boards, gilt by means of an iron not recorded in OHR, close however to the small size of iron n° 1 of pl. n° 2399. The work appears in the catalogue of the library of Madame de Pompadour, but in a different copy, on large paper bound in red morocco.
