ORDER OF MALTA. - BAVIÈRE (Charles-Théodore... - Lot 6 - Osenat
ORDER OF MALTA. - BAVIÈRE (Charles-Théodore de Wittelsbach, duke elector of). 2 pieces signed. 1781 and 1794. GRAND-PRIEURE AND LANGUAGE OF BAVIERE. While on the one hand the Order of Malta was seeking to re-establish a precarious financial situation, on the other hand the Elector of Bavaria, Count Palatine of the Rhine, wished to associate the Order of Malta with his nobility. But, being a deeply Catholic, he did not want to hear of an aggregation of the Bailiwick of Brandenburg, which had returned to the Order in 1763 and was under the protection of the Protestant King of Prussia. Negotiations were held in 1773 with the Order of Malta, but as the Bavarian clergy refused to provide the necessary funding, the Duke of Bavaria decided to resort to the property and income of the Jesuit Order, which had been abolished in 1773. The Grand Priory of Bavaria was established on December 14, 1781, forming the "Language of Bavaria" and including Upper and Lower Bavaria, Neuburg, Sulzbach and the Upper Palatinate. After further negotiations, the former Grand Priory of England, the Priory of Ireland and the Bailiwick of Eagle were added to it on 9 April 1782 to form the "Anglo-Bavarian Language" (the Bull of Erection was not issued until 1784). In 1785, the Grand Priory of Poland (founded in 1776 as a result of the first partition of Poland in 1772) was added. However, this Polish Grand Priory came under the control of the Tsar in 1793 after the third partition in 1795, and in 1797 was renamed the Russian Grand Priory, while the Anglo-Bavarian Language was renamed the Anglo-Bavarian-Russian Language. This was ended in 1808 when the Bavarian Elector Maximilian Joseph of Wittelsbach, elevated to the rank of king by Napoleon I, abolished the Bavarian Grand Priory.
