BEAULIEU (Sébastien de Pontault de). - Collection... - Lot 1 - Osenat
BEAULIEU (Sébastien de Pontault de). - Collection of 14 works engraved on copper. [Paris], Beaurain, [mid 18th century]. The whole bound in 2 volumes in-folio, brown granite calf, spines with partitions and fleurons with garnet title-pieces, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with fleurons in spandrels, worn and stained bindings, some marginal wetnesses in the second volume (period binding). COMPLETE SERIES OF 14 COLLECTIONS OF PLANS AND PROFILES KNOWN AS "PETITS BEAULIEU". With allegorical titles engraved by different artists among whom Romein De Hooge (at least 7 of them) and Nicolas Cochin. The "Petits Beaulieu", which were originally published between 1668 and 1678 in prints with one copper plate per oblong leaf, appear here in their reissue by Jean de Beaurain in the middle of the 18th century, in prints with 2 or 3 copper plates per page on the front of folios, with various numberings added. As is often the case, several plates are missing here, including a title, and the copies almost always have different collations. SEBASTIEN DE PONTHAULT DE BEAULIEU (ca. 1612-1674) was an ARTILLERY OFFICER IN THE ARMY OF LOUIS XIII AND LOUIS XIV, and in this volume he offers maps, plans and views ("profiles") of towns and strongholds in the border regions of France where he himself participated in the military campaigns of the royal armies. Some of these collections were completed by his nephew by marriage, Jean-Baptiste Hamont, sieur Des Roches. Sébastien de Ponthault de Beaulieu is also the author of another collection, known as the "Grand Beaulieu" because of its folio format, devoted specifically to the battles of Louis XIV. The composition of the present collection, presented in its material order, with the numbers proposed by Mireille Pastoureau for the original editions: [II, ARTOIS].
