1983 RENAULT 18 TURBO BREAK
Serial number VF1135500D0000199 Ex-family Rédélé 100,000 original kilometres Nice condition French registration The Renault 18 is a French saloon car par excellence. It was created at the end of the 1970s to replace the Renault 12, which was at the end of its service life. As a car for our parents or as a first car, the 18 allowed a large population to travel in comfort at a reduced price. A real success at the beginning of the 1980s, the 18 was the best-selling French saloon and its production was already being exported internationally; the Renault brand used this image to launch its slogan "Renault 18, an international requirement". Reliable and sturdy, the saloon car was initially powered by the brand's renowned engines, notably the Cléon engine in cast iron or aluminium versions, followed by the Douvrin engine, which was slightly larger in displacement and could also be fuelled by diesel, an energy source that was in full expansion during this period. A great fashion in the 1970s and 1980s, the precise name of the models chosen by the owners was affixed to the rear trunk as a distinctive sign of superiority or almost nobility in some cases; thus, the TL models were the laughing stock of the GTLs or GTSs, which themselves were overtaken by the word "turbo" before which one could only bow down. Introduced in 1980, two years after the start of the model's design, the turbo finish already offered 110 horsepower to the sedan's users thanks to the addition of a turbocharger to the 1.6 litre "cleon-alu" engine. The initial pressure of 0.6 bar was slightly increased for 1983, allowing the car to develop 125 horsepower. The model we are presenting is a 1983 Renault 18 in estate bodywork and powered by the turbo version. The car appears to be in good mechanical and cosmetic condition and the current owner bought it from Jean Rédélé's son in 2013, where it was to be used on numerous trips by the father and son. A handwritten letter from Jean-Charles attests to this provenance, the car was sold without a registration document. Today the car is presented to us in a beautiful pearly white dress with its stickers and its original mouldings in accordance with the top-of-the-range finish. The interior is not to be outdone and the red cloth upholstery is in perfect condition and offers good lateral support. The black plastics on the dashboard are also well preserved, as is the large leather and aluminium "sport" steering wheel which harmonises the whole. Interesting to drive, the turbo station wagon is above all a great tourer capable of swallowing up the kilometres without effort for either the car or the driver; its specific station wagon bodywork makes it a useful car that must surely have rubbed shoulders with the Alpine circuits and competitions in its past. Attractive and unusual, a Renault 18 Turbo Break in this condition and with this provenance, there are no two!
