David SUTTER (1811-1880) Personnage en sous-bois, Fontainebleau Oil on canvas Signed lower right 26 x 45.5 cm With frame : 55.5 x 74.5 cm Exhibited at the Salon, Société des amis 1886 in Bordeaux Ami de Théodore Rousseau Oil on canvas, signed lower right, 10.25 x 17.91 in With frame : 21.85 x 29.33 in A man of art, letters and sciences, David Sutter practiced painting with Camille Flers in Paris. Sutter also set up his easel in the Fontainebleau region and became friends with Théodore Rousseau, Jean François Millet and Georges Seurat. He exhibited at the Salon between 1842 and 1864. His work was much appreciated, as this review by Charles Bataille for the Quinzaine attests: "David Sutter is a landscape painter, - and one of the best, that is to say, one of the most conscientious, in my opinion, Dennecourt, the lover of the Fontainebleau forest, loves this picturesque forest less than David Sutter, who has this precious advantage over his rival of being able to translate into colourful language the emotions that this intimate trade, this incessant communion with the great nature has given him". p.20.
