AUGUSTE XAVIER LEPRINCE (PARIS 1799 - NICE 1826) The village wedding, The market Pair of canvas and stretcher (Giroux in Paris) Height: 49 cm Width: 65 cm The village wedding is signed and dated on the boat "A.X Leprince 1825" The market is signed and dated lower left "a x / Leprince 1825" Provenance: Charles Balaÿ's, Lyon, in 1986. Auguste Xavier Leprince comes from a family of landscape painters. His work can be compared to that of Louis-Léopold Boilly, for his taste for modern subjects and for picturesque details. He won his first medal at the Salon of 1819. In 1824, Auguste Xavier Leprince stayed with Eugène Isabey in Honfleur. At the Salon of 1824, the Duchess of Berry bought The Skaters and at the Salon of 1826, Charles X became the owner of two paintings, L'embarquement des bestiaux dans le passage à Honfleur and Le passage de Susten. Our two paintings date from a year before his death from a chest illness. The Salon of 1827 will pay him tribute.
