JEAN-FRANÇOIS DEMAY (MIRECOURT 1798 - PARIS 1850) La recolte des cerises, la fête du village Pair of canvases Frame : original redorated Height : 27 cm Width : 38 cm M Lefebvre (according to an inscription on the back of the frame) Signed and dated lower left and center "Demay 1838" Damage to the frame Provenance : At Galerie Du Léthé, Paris, in 1982. Like Jean Louis De Marne, Demay was inspired by the fashion of the Dutch masters of the XVIIe century Dutch masters and sought to valorize previously underestimated subjects and characters. This ambition to represent everyday life in large formats was a success in France in the first half of the 19th century and marked a turning point in the choice of subjects: the desire was no longer to highlight the heroic aspect of history painting, but to claim the charm of ordinary life. Demay thus painted the joy of reunions with soldiers returning from the front, the shows of acrobats and other picturesque themes bringing together, for the duration of an event, each inhabitant. These compositions are an opportunity to depict a whole range of characters, whose diversity illustrates a joyful peasant life.
