Pair of lamps called CARCEL in gilt bronze and green lacquer, the baluster shaft chiselled with lotus leaves and acanthus leaves rests on a quadrangular base decorated with victories holding flaming torches, stylized griffins, a bouquet of flowers and a square base with a large frieze of palmettes ending with small claw feet topped by palmettes and acanthus leaves. Restoration period (mounted as a lamp, part of the mechanism preserved, small difference in height) H : 76 and 79 cm - W : 20 - D : 20 cm The Carcel lamp was invented in 1800 by the clockmaker Bertrand Guillaume Carcel (1750-1812). It is a vegetable oil lamp with a suction-pressure pump driven by a clockwork motor which, wound up by a key, allows a constant supply of the wick for more than ten hours. This type of lamps, expensive and fragile, is reserved for a wealthy clientele. The system was improved in 1837 by Fauchet.
