LORENZO BARTOLINI (1777-1850), ATTRIBUTED TO THE FRENCH SCHOOL C.E. 1808 The Emperor Napoleon I as Hermes wearing a laurel wreath. Bust in white Carrara marble. Height : 60 - W : 32 - D : 27 cm. (Repairs to the crown and the nose). Bibliography: - G. Hubert, G. Ledoux-Lebard, Napoleon, contemporary portraits, busts and statues. Paris, 1999, p. 99-102. - S. Hoog, Catalogue of the National Museum of the Palace of Versailles. Les Sculptures. I- Le Musée, Paris, 1993, no. 1305. History: If at first the Academy of Sculpture of Carrara offered by Napoleon I to his sister Elisa Baciocchi in 1807 was content to produce in series the official model created by Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810), its director the great Florentine sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850) brought his personal touch. While keeping the lines of the official model, he carves a slightly larger head covered with a laurel wreath held in place by a bow whose ribbons fall on the emperor's shoulders. This production of his own seems to be limited and was the subject of prestigious commissions. In 1802, he was awarded the second Prix de Rome, official commissions and above all a colossal Hermes in bronze of the Emperor, erected on August 16, 1805 above the main entrance of the Napoleon Museum.
