SEVRES Bisque bust representing General Louis Charles Antoine Desaix in front, wearing a frock coat. On the reverse side the inscription in hollow: Marked on the reverse side Desaix. Consulate period, circa 1801. It rests on a round molded granite base Height : 34 cm Small chips. The archives of the Sèvres factory reveal that the bust of General Desaix (1768-1800) was made from pluviôve year IX, that is to say February 1801. The young general had just been mortally wounded on 14 June 1800 by a bullet to the heart during the battle of Marengo. This posthumous portrait is thus a touching tribute to this young 31 year old soldier who allowed the victory of the French army against the Austrians. The first two busts were delivered to the Government on 23 Ventôse year IX (14 March 1801). Two others were delivered to the Ministry of the Interior on 2 Germinal year IX (23 March 1801). Finally, the citizens Hettlinger and Lafôret receive one each in the year X.
