CARLE VERNET (1758-1836). Project of sabretache for Eugène de Beauharnais for the coronation of the Emperor. Gouache in the form of a sabretache strap, annotated in ink in the upper part "Pr Eugène Napoléon Beauharnais". 44 x 35 cm. Presented under a shaped passe-partout. A.B.E. (Moisture stain in the lower right corner). First Empire period Provenance : Augustin André PICOT (1756-1822) was born in Abbeville, his father was a master tailor, his brother a ladies tailor. He settled in Paris, created his own firm in 1775 and quickly became the embroiderer of the Kings, Louis XVI and Louis XVIII. Bonaparte entrusted him with the embroidery of everything concerning his coronation at Notre-Dame de Paris (1804, painted by David). Thousands of bees were embroidered on Napoleon's and Josephine's coats, on all the hangings, as well as on the thrones, armchairs and footrests, flags and standards. At Bonaparte's request, Picot created the academicians' costume, embroidered with olive leaves. He was one of the first to be promoted to Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. He had two children Sophie and François Edouard (1786-1868), a history painter and portraitist who, from his marriage to Marie Liegeois (1762-1801), became a descendant of the "marchand-mercier" Gersaint (1718-1750).
