Biography: Élisabeth de Mac Mahon, born Élisabeth Charlotte Sophie de La Croix de Castries (1834-1900). Her father, Armand Charles Henri (1807-1862), was the son of the duke Charles de La Croix de Castries and the half-brother of the duke Edmond de La Croix de Castries. She became Élisabeth de Mac Mahon on 14 March 1854, the day of her marriage in Paris to Patrice de Mac Mahon, future Marshal of France and Duke of Magenta. They had four children. When her husband became President of the French Republic in 1873, she decided to give a more luxurious look to the Elysée Palace, notably by carrying out renovation work. Élisabeth de Mac Mahon had a real influence on the President of the Republic. She had political opinions and therefore supported the Count of Chambord, a pretender to the French throne. Thus, she let it be known when she did not like a minister or a high official. The President followed her advice by dismissing the President of the Council, Jules Simon, in 1877, and she also played a role in the crisis of 16 May 1877. For the visit to France of the Tsarevich Nicholas of Russia (the future Nicholas II), she had the ballroom (begun under the Second Empire) transformed into an honorary dining room at the Élysée Palace. She also ordered the creation of a vermeil service for the palace, which is still used today. Elisabeth de Mac Mahon was president of the central committee of the French Red Cross for several years.
