FRENCH SCHOOL, 1861 Reception of the Siamese ambassadors by Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie at the Palace of Fontainebleau on June 27, 1861 Canvas, in a painted oval Unframed Height: 55 cm Width: 46 cm Old restorations, small scratches History: On June 27, 1861, in the ballroom of the Château de Fontainebleau, Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie received the ambassadors of the King of Siam Rama IV Mongkut and their retinue: they advanced on their knees to the foot of the imperial throne. The reception celebrates the treaty signed between France and Siam on August 15, 1856, ensuring access to Western trade for this country that was previously closed to trade.
