Gilded bronze GROUP representing an episode from the story o - Lot 302
Gilded bronze GROUP representing an episode from the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, one of the most famous love stories of Greek mythology. Eurydice draped in the antique style carried by Orpheus holds a garland of forget-me-nots in her right hand. They stand on a cylindrical base and a square base in sea-green marble. Early 19th century H: 37.5 cm Provenance: Jean LEFEVRE Collection (1908- 1965), architect. Orpheus is the son of the muse Calliope, muse of Eloquence and Poetry, and the king of Thrace Oeagre. Suspected of being the son of Apollo, who made him his pupil, he showed great talent for music and poetry from his childhood. Thus Apollo gave him a seven-stringed lyre to which he added two strings in honour of the Muses. On his return from a long expedition with the Argonauts, he met Eurydice, a dryad, with whom he fell madly in love. Orpheus and Eurydice get married. Eurydice bathes every morning in the river with the naiads. A shepherd by the name of Aristaeus, whose advances she refuses, ends up chasing them, but Eurydice steps on a deadly snake and dies instantly. Desperate Orpheus goes to the gate of the underworld, in Laconia, in the hope of bringing Eurydice back. Hades, the merciless God of the Dead, allows him to bring his beloved back to the realm of the living, on the sole condition that Orpheus does not turn around until she has reached the shore of the living and the light of the sun. Unfortunately he turns back, not hearing Eurydice follow him and he loses her forever.
