VERLAINE (Paul). Autograph poem signed "Paul Verlaine" entit - Lot 122
VERLAINE (Paul). Autograph poem signed "Paul Verlaine" entitled "À Léon Vanier, homme de bien". 14 verses on a sheet in-12 extracted from a printed form of the Assistance publique, verses written in light black ink and signature in dark brown ink, erasures and corrections. 1 000/1 500 €A SONNET FROM THE COLLECTION OF DEDICATIONS. Originally published in the weekly magazine Le Chat noir on November 15, 1890, it was integrated under n° lvi in 1894 in the second edition of his collection Dédicaces, published by Léon Vanier. The subtitle of the present manuscript, "homme de bien" (good man), appears in the final version printed by "Le Chat noir", but has not been retained in the collection. TO SEAL A RECONCILIATION WITH HIS PUBLISHER. In the summer of 1889, Paul Verlaine had fallen out with Léon Vanier over an advertisement for Bonheur placed in Parallèlement. Having been unable to reach an agreement with another publisher, Albert Savine, he undertook to reconcile with Léon Vanier. The present poem takes up the terms of a letter he sent him in December 1889, in which he demanded money in exchange for a promise of a sonnet, using the same double image of the "golden calf" and the "fat calf". Paul Verlaine, Œuvres poétiques complètes, Paris, Gallimard (Nrf, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade), 2010 (1962), pp. 595-596.
