RAVEL (Maurice). Autograph letter signed to his wartime godm - Lot 113
RAVEL (Maurice). Autograph letter signed to his wartime godmother Madame Fernand Dreyfus. Megeve, January 15, 1919. 4 pp. in-12. "My dear godmother, your letter arrived just as I was about to write to you. Last night, a letter from Garban [the composer Lucien Garban] had told me that Mr. Dreyfus was ill, but without giving me many details. I hope he will soon recover... The appalling weather in Paris must have contributed greatly to this malaise, which will surely dissipate with the sunshine, which has returned, according to what I am told. Here, it has been as if it were the middle of summer for the last six days - except for the snow, which is radiant in this light. Well! It hasn't recovered at all. I don't sleep anymore - at most 4 hours a night. You can imagine how bad I am. Tomorrow, if I don't get better, I'll see Dr. Burty, who's visiting for a few days. Because there's nothing here, no doctor - there's one who comes by once a week, and he looks a bit flaky - no pharmacist... not even a hairdresser. (At least, there is one, but he only knows how to do it with clippers). So Mr. Appert - the head of the family of my dining companions - and I are beginning to look like "artists". We're going to have to be transported by sleigh, either to Sallanches or to St. Gervais one of these days. We'll have our hair cut very short, because it's expensive. The news that Roland is in Panam has clogged up a lot less of it than you supposed: Garban had told me. I hope that you will soon be able to rest, and that your next will announce to me the complete recovery of M. Dreyfus. My affectionate remembrance to all - Roland and Suzanne included, when you see them - of your devoted Maurice Ravel. Do you know the Derbannes - who lived in Lyons? They are friends of my companions in exile [the Dreyfus owned a house in Lyons-la-Forêt, in the Eure, where Maurice Ravel stayed]. "LETTER TO THE MOTHER OF TWO MEN WHO MATTERED TO HIM: Jean Dreyfus, who died in battle and to whom he dedicated Le Tombeau de Couperin, and Roland-Manuel, his pupil and future biographer, composer and pedagogue, who married the pianist Suzanne Roux
