PONGE (Francis). Autograph manuscript signed "Francis Ponge" and "F. P.", entitled "L'Imparfait ou les Poissons volants". (8) ff. of which the last is blank, in a paperback booklet. SUITE OF 6 POEMS COMPOSED IN 1924 AND INTEGRATED IN 1948 IN THE COLLECTION PROÊMES. It is presented as a theatrical work with six characters, here not yet named. « ... IV. "Naturally there were foals rearing in the branches, chariots articulated to climb the rocks. A strong wind slowly pushed me, circulated through the floors of the skies where suspended parks waved, sometimes covered, in the quarter of the building clouds, the stairs, the monumental rockeries. Men hid there. They kept their eyes wide open. No doubt, when I think of it, Venus was born elsewhere."... "Autograph mention on the title page: "Sunday. (I sent a copy to Jacques Rivière). The poet sent the text in 1924 to various magazines but none of them published it, not even Jacques Rivière's Nrf, where Francis Ponge nevertheless enjoyed the support of Jean Pauhan. "L'Imparfait ou les Poissons volants" is part of the "Logical Fables" which, devoted to linguistic poetics, were then disassembled and distributed in three different collections: first, "Naissance de Vénus" (1922), an exercise on the present indicative and on "the colon", was integrated in 1961 into the "Lyres" part of the volume Le Grand recueil. The present text, "L'Imparfait ou les Poissons volants" (1924), was included in 1948 in the collection Proêmes - with the addition of the names of the six fictional characters ("spirits of the imperfect") who each pronounced one of these poetic speeches. Finally, "Du Logoscope" (ca. 1925), on the physiognomy of words, was the only text preserved in the suite entitled "Fables logiques" published in the journal Le Disque vert in July-August 1953, then integrated in 1961 in the "Méthodes" section of his volume Le Grand recueil. Francis Ponge described his work on these three series of "Fables logiques" in his Entretiens [...] avec Philippe Sollers, published in 1970.
