SKETCH OF A TREATISE ON LAUGHTER. Opening with a critique of Henri Bergson's Le Rire. Essai sur la signification du comique (1900), the text then widens the field explored: "Here is now the Law we propose, a unique Law, which must explain, in itself, all the laughter of humanity since the first sun of the world. Laughter is a song of triumph, it is the expression of a momentary but suddenly discovered superiority of the laugher over the mocked. There are two kinds of Laughter, as far apart as the two poles of our planet. The first is true Laughter, the healthy, invigorating, restful laughter: I laugh because I feel superior to you (or to him, or to the whole world). We will call it POSITIVE LAUGHTER. The second is hard, and almost sad: I laugh because you are inferior to me. I am not laughing at my superiority, I am laughing at your inferiority. This is NEGATIVE LAUGHTER, the laughter of revenge, of vendetta, or at least of revenge. Between these two kinds of laughter we shall meet with ALL SORT OF NUANCES. And on the equator, at equal distance from these two poles, we will find the COMPLETE LAUGHTER, constituted by the association of the two laughter. When the Leclerc army recaptured Paris, we laughed with tears of joy because France was delivered and regained its place in the world, and we laughed bitterly because the oppressor was driven out, trampled on, crushed. It was a complete laughter, a laughter of the whole body and the whole soul: it was, in its strength, the Laughter of Man... "Marcel Pagnol then specifically deals with "positive laughter", then with the respective limits of laughter, pity and fear.
