KENNEDY ( John Fitzgerald). Letter signed "John" to John Edw - Lot 90
KENNEDY ( John Fitzgerald). Letter signed "John" to John Edward Maguire. Washington, December 12, 1957. 1 p. typewritten folio, printed letterhead "John F. Kennedy. Massachusetts. Committees. For_x0002_eign relations. Labor and public welfare," signed preserved envelope (claw). "DEAR MAC... I IMAGINE IT WOULD BE RATHER DIFFICULT TO GET THE FILM OF NAVY LOG PROGRAM ON THE PT-109. However, I do have a copy of that film in my office and if you would like for me to send it to you and after you have run it, return it to me, I would be very glad to do so. Let me know if you would like for me to do this. Also, under separate cover, I am sending your son, Jack, Jr. an autographed copy of my recent book. The next time I am in Jacksonville I will certainly give you a ring. With every good wish... "J.F.K.'S FRIEND AND BROTHER-IN-ARMY, JACK MAGUIRE, AKA "MAC", had been a member of the crew of the ship commanded by John Fitzgerald Kennedy (Patrol Torpedo 109) during World War II. This ship collided with a Japanese ship in 1943 in the Solomon Islands and sank. The American survivors had taken refuge on an island and J.F.K. had shown on this occasion personal heroism and abnegation towards his crew. This adventure inspired two films, one for a television series (Navy Log), the other for the big screen, PT-109. After the war, Jack Maguire had been part of J.F.K.'s campaign teams for the senatorial and then presidential elections, then had been appointed chief of police in Florida ("U.S. marshall for the middle district of Florida").
