HUGO (Victor). Autograph letter signed with his initial "V. - Lot 85
HUGO (Victor). Autograph letter signed with his initial "V. [to Noël Parfait]. Marine Terrace [ Jersey], "July 10, Tuesday" [1855]. 4 pp. in-16. HUGO IS DIRECTING AT A DISTANCE THE PRINTING OF HIS COLLECTION LES CONTEMPLATIONS, which was to appear in 1856. Noël Parfait, a republican who had taken refuge in Brussels, acted as an intermediary for Victor Hugo, who was in exile in Jersey (1852-1855) and then Guernsey (1855-1870), with the printers who printed his works in Belgium: he proved to be very useful both materially and literarily, his proofreading being particularly attentive. "I HAVE RECEIVED SHEET III. I cannot send it back to you to-day, as the packet boat, which arrived late owing to the fog, is just leaving again [packet boats were connecting vessels used for the conveyance of mail and postal packets, as well as for a reduced transport of passengers]. YOUR OBSERVATION ON "SEREINE LUEUR" AND "VAGUE LUEUR", IS PERFECTLY JUST, AND I THANK YOU FOR IT, DEAR BROTHER. I WILL MAKE IT RIGHT: YOU WILL RECEIVE THE ARRANGEMENT AFTER TOMORROW, plus sheet 3 corrected, plus the end of book III (which will complete the 1st volume) plus a few verses to be inserted in the Réponse à un acte d'accusation [a poem from Les Contemplations directed against Napoléon III]. Today, I am sending you a good part of Book III, up to and including Room XX and page 139 of the manuscript: I am writing you brimborions, but I ask you for good long letters. My wife, my daughter, my sons, are crazy about you. So much the worse. Your political and literary nuance charms them. Vacquerie [the writer and friend of Victor Hugo, Auguste Vacquerie] is at the moment in Paris, near his sick mother. I send him your regards. Put me at the feet of your beautiful and gracious wife. Write to me at my home, in my name. No problem. Ask for the proofs to be sent without tape. Shake hands again - and thank you. Ex imo [Latin for "rope," meaning: "from the heart"]... »
