GAULLE (Charles de). Autograph letter signed [to Jean Auburt - Lot 79
GAULLE (Charles de). Autograph letter signed [to Jean Auburtin]. Paris, April 3, 1935. 2 pp. in-8, printed letterhead "Presidency of the Supreme Council of National Defense. Secretariat General", crumpled paper. Interesting letter evoking his efforts to advance his military ideas, to which he had just devoted a book in 1934, L'Armée de métier. In it, he affirmed the interest of a professional army, the role of tanks and the air force, and a policy adapted to action that was not exclusively defensive. "Your article in "L'Homme nouveau" is excellent. I thank you very much for the "idea" and for myself. Here we are obliged to keep for three months under the flag the half_x0002_contingent normally released in April. This is one more proof of the chronic inconsistency of our system. Simple question: "Wouldn't things be different if we had a professional army! In June there will be a major military debate in Parliament. It would be an asset of the first order if M. [Marcel] Déat were to intervene and combine his intervention on the left with that of M. Paul Reynaud on the right. All my warmest regards... "A friend of Charles de Gaulle, the lawyer and journalist Jean Auburtin met him at the home of Colonel Émile Mayer in 1934, and showed himself to be favourable to his military ideas. Charles de Gaulle called him to his cabinet in 1940. He would later become a senator.
