GAUGUIN (Paul). Autograph letter signed to Émile Schuffeneck - Lot 78
GAUGUIN (Paul). Autograph letter signed to Émile Schuffenecker. Moëlan-sur-Mer (Finistère), 16 October 1890. 4 pp. in-12, envelope preserved. "My dear Schuffenecker, I received your letter with all its good news, but I have been for some time now so depressed that I can hardly believe in good things. NOTHING RECEIVED FROM VAN GOGH [the merchant Theo Van Gogh, Vincent's brother], and perhaps that is very little. I owe 350 francs here on the 11th of the month, so there are a lot of expenses to pay, and the Van Gogh affair will plug the hole. If I can, I will be in Paris next week: I want to leave and I NEED TO GET BACK TO PARIS TO LEAVE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE CONDITIONS... I AM VERY MUCH SURPRISED AT THE HARM I AM DOING TO MYSELF WITH MY HAUGHTY NATURE. You don't explain yourself on that. The people who could be useful to me are few, I know them and I don't think I've mistreated them. AS FOR THOSE WHO COULD HURT ME, PISSARRO AND Co., IT IS MORE FOR THE TALENT THAT THEY CRITICE THAN FOR MY CHARACTER. No matter what I do, my head is always there to make people believe that I am disdainful. I can't help it. What the hell, you never win by courting fools. And I have reason to despise a great "WHEN I'M IN TAITI I WILL NOT CARE ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE... "BOOKS & AUTOGRAPHS THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2021 100part of the world. Anyway, let's move on. WHEN I WILL BE IN TAÏTI I WON'T CARE ABOUT THOSE PEOPLE [he would leave in 1891]. I HAVE FINISHED MY WOODWORK WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE BETTER THAN THE OTHER OR AT LEAST AS GOOD, IT IS SCULPTURED ON BOTH SIDES [these are his woodworks Be mysterious, completed in 1890, and Be in love you will be happy, sculpted in 1889]. Charlopin had written to me that I would be paid on the 12th at the latest. It is always a small commitment in writing. I don't understand all these delays. Finally, as you say, let's hope [Dr. Charlepin, a collector, had promised Paul Gauguin an important purchase of paintings, conditional on the success of a patent which never came]. If you see Laval again, you can tell him that I am astonished at his silence for a year. I never hear from him anything that interests him in my fate [the painter Charles Laval had known Paul Gauguin at Pont-Aven and had stayed with him in Panama and Martinique]. Finally, if he earns a little money, so much the better, I believe that he will need it more than anyone else, and that he will have a very unhappy life later on without even having the right to complain... "PAUL GAUGUIN'S FRIEND, CLAUDE_x0002_ÉMILE SCHUFFENECKER, a painter of the Pont-Aven School, met the latter in 1872 while working for the same stockbroker. He was keen to support him morally and financially but Paul Gauguin in return showed a certain contempt for his painting and a falling out occurred in the early 1890s.
