FRANCK (César). Autograph musical manuscript signed in 2 pla - Lot 74
FRANCK (César). Autograph musical manuscript signed in 2 places, in_x0002_titled " Les Djinns ". Title page and 38 pp. in-folio with 3 systems of 4 staves on paper manually set to 12 staves (dry stamp Lard-Esnault), some corrections in red ink, manuscript prepared for the edition with annotations in red and blue pencil, some stains. SYMPHONIC POEM, IN ITS VERSION ARRANGED FOR TWO PIANOS. COMPOSED AFTER VICTOR HUGO'S FAMOUS ORIENTAL POEM (1829), this musical piece renders its broad central movement of verbal and narrative amplification. Extensive dynamic indications, also present here, underline this movement: " p. express. suppliant, but with anxiety and a little agitation. "molto dolce, little by little with more calm and confidence". César Franck worked on this work during the summer of 1884, at his property in Quincy in the Seine-et-Marne: he completed his score for piano and orchestra (CFF 136) on 27 July 1884, and his arrangement for two pianos (CFF 136a) on 6 September 1884 - the date appearing on another manuscript, preserved at the BnF. AUTOGRAPH DEDICATION " TO MADAME MONTIGNY-RÉMAURY ". A VIRTUOUS PIANIST AND PUPIL OF FRANZ LISZT, Caroline Rémaury was married twice, the first to the journalist Léon Montigny (died in 1872), and the second to the engineer Auguste de Serres-Wieczffinski. She is the dedicatee of works composed by Fauré, Lalo, Pierné, Saint-Saëns... It was at her request that César Franck wrote Djinns, but she never played it, perhaps because she was the sister-in-law of Ambroise Thomas, who was wrongly considered to be opposed to him. The first performance was given to Louis Diémer and the orchestra conducted by Édouard Colonne for the Société nationale de musique at the Théâtre du Châtelet on 15 March 1885. The version for two pianos was published in 1886 by Enoch frères & Costallat (under no. 1149, which appears here on the title page), with a dedication to Caroline Rémaury under her second married name ("to Madame de Serres").
