EINSTEIN (Albert). Autograph letter signed with his initials - Lot 69
EINSTEIN (Albert). Autograph letter signed with his initials, in alle_x0002_mand, addressed to Ernst Gabor Straus. S.l., [date of handwritten receipt 18 February 1950]. 1/2 p. folio in fine, tight handwriting. THE BIG PICTURE OF THE ISSUES IS NOW SO CONFUSED. The question of the "Compatibility" of the high systems is also as unresolved as in the past. "RESEARCH ON THE UNIFIED FIELD THEORY. After his publications on special relativity (1905) and general relativity (1916), Albert Einstein carried out research into quantum physics and then worked on the "generalization of the relativistic theory of gravitation" in the "unified field theory". Keeping relatively out of the mainstream of science at the time, he devoted his last years to this vast undertaking which, by reconciling the laws of gravity, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, was to explain the universe as a whole. Starting from the principle of the importance of invariance properties, he considered that physics should be thought of as a geometry, and came to a theory according to which the structure of space-time is the seat of gravitational interaction. He nevertheless sought in vain to find out whether this structure could determine other interactions. Despite this failure, his work on the unified field theory later found extensions in evolutionary cosmology and physical theories of symmetry. Moreover, the pioneering method he followed there was later successfully revived, i.e. a method according to which a theory of the laws of nature is developed from the study of equations (based on formal simplicity and the principle of invariance) formalized on the basis of an intuition. ASSISTANT TO EINSTEIN FROM 1944 TO 1948, THE MATHEMATICIAN ERNST GABOR STRAUS detected a computational error in one of EINSTEIN's works and, in order to correct this error, wrote a paper with him in 1946 entitled A generalization of the relativistic theory of gravitation. In 1949, having left his position with Einstein at Princeton University, he published Some results in Einstein's unified field theory. The two scientists remained in a working relationship thereafter.
