COCTEAU ( Jean). Autograph letter signed to Jean Marais. Per - Lot 60
COCTEAU ( Jean). Autograph letter signed to Jean Marais. Perpignan, July 1940. 1 p. folio. After the debacle, Jean Cocteau had taken refuge in Perpignan. Jean Marais, still a soldier, would soon be demobilised and join him there. "Your letters bring me enough to live on and I would like you to come and eat something other than squirrel. EVERY DAY ON THE RADIO I LOOK FOR THE DEMOBILIZATION - but they are demobilizing the farm workers and civil servants first. I guess the new Government isn't keen on feeding the men - even with squirrels - and you'll be dropped soon. Hang on to our star in Perpignan. If you are questioned, say that your family is in P[erpignan] and find a thousand pretexts so that they don't take you to the occupied zone. If necessary, hide at the Lannes' [Jean Cocteau was close to the writer Roger Lannes]. I SEE OUR MEETING AS A DREAM and the slightest obstacle to it going smoothly scares me. Besides, I imagine it will be quite simple and we'll let you go wherever you want. "ORDER" ALWAYS SCARES ME WHEN IT'S NOT OURS. So ask around and make sure you get here as soon as you can. MY ANGEL, I AM HAPPY. I KISS YOU ON THE HEART... »
