BRETON (André). Autograph letter signed to his "dear friend" - Lot 53
BRETON (André). Autograph letter signed to his "dear friend" [probably Alain Gheerbrant]. New York, October 11, 1945. 2 pp. in-folio. "I UNRESERVEDLY APPROVE THE PROJECT OF THIS ISSUE OF VRILLE IN THE FORM IN WHICH YOU PRESENT IT TO ME. If I was a little more circumspect about what Henri Parisot and Victor Brauner proposed to me, tell them that it was because they left me lacking in concrete details, which does not mean that I am not fully committed to them. You are putting me at ease by telling me that they will be with you in this task. A letter from Henri Parisot confirmed this to me this morning. I VERY MUCH WISH THAT THE COVERAGE OF VRILLE No. 2 BE CONFERRED TO VICTOR BRAUNER and that in the choice of illustrations and their general distribution the greatest account be taken of his advice. As you predicted, I DO NOT HAVE ANY INDEED TEXTS, EXCEPT FOR A LONG POEM OF COMBAT, "ODE TO CHARLES FOURIER" which requires a very particular presentation incompatible with the framework of a review and which I reserve for the editions of Henri Parisot (would you please tell him). I THEREFORE PROPOSE TO REPRODUCE IN VRILLE "LES ÉTATS GÉNÉRAUX" AND "LUMIÈRE NOIRE" [texts written by André Breton in 1943]... I agree completely with the list of collaborators you are submitting to me. I can only suggest extending it somewhat (to [ Joan] MIRÓ, Barcellone, [Édouard Léon Théodore] MÉSENS and [ Jacques_x0002_Bernard] BRUNIUS, London, [Georges] HÉNEIN, Cairo, [Esteban] FRANCES, Mexico, Kay SAGE, David HARE, 52. BRAQUE (Georges). Autograph letter signed to Paul Westheim. Paris, April 13, 1922. 1 p. in-folio, with small apostille in blue pencil in German. 400/500 € " I send you here the picture of the drawing I promised you. I think it will be very good for the reproduction. Perhaps you could have the margin retouched for the print to remove the bright flashes in it, an almost plain tone would be more advantageous I think... (This is understood for the signature[s]) " ART HISTORIAN AND ESSAYIST, THE GERMAN PAUL WESTHEIM directed since 1917 the important artistic periodical Das Kunstblatt : he would publish there in August 1922 an article dedicated to art in France ("Kunst in Frankreich") in which he PRESENTED GEORGES BRAQUE AS THE MAIN CUBIST ARTIST. BOOKS & AUTOGRAPHS THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2021 66BOOKS & AUTOGRAPHS 67THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2021Jacqueline LAMBA, Patrick WALDBERG, Isabelle WALDBERG, Dorothea TANNING, New York, [ Jacques] HÉROLD, [ Jacques] PRÉVERT, Julien GRACQ, France. Perhaps you could ask René Renne and Claude Serbannei (... in Marseille) to communicate to you some of their studies on the surrealist painters (I only knew of their studies on [Yves] Tanguy, which seemed to me to be very valid). To make certain research easier for you, I am going to give you two poems by Aimé CÉSAIRE, a text by Georges Hénein, a poem by Patrick Waldberg and a tale by Leonora CARRINGTON, all unpublished, as well as photographic reproductions of works by TANGUY, [Roberto] MATTA, Miró, [Wilfredo] LAM, Kay Sage, David Hare, Jacqueline Lamba, Isabelle Waldberg. I would point out that Leonora Carrington's story needs some editing for syntactical correctness, but it seems to me to stand up brilliantly otherwise. I BELIEVE IT WOULD BE FIT TO USE AS MANY YOUNG ELEMENTS AS POSSIBLE (as long as they are relatively safe) and to avoid a purely anthological character in the review: in my opinion, it should include in-depth studies of a certain number of outstanding works of the last period, such as those of [Maurice] BLANCHOT, [Georges] BATAILLE, [ Jean-Paul] SARTRE, [Henri] MICHAUX, Gracq, [Albert] CAMUS, [ Jules] MONNEROT, etc. ARCANE 17" COULD ALSO BE REPORTED. I believe that the works already republished by Parisot (Hugo, Cros, Coleridge, etc.) should be reviewed. "La Poésie moderne et le sacré" [by Jules Monnerot], as well as [Maurice] Nadeau's "Histoire du surréalisme" (the latter I have not yet been able to get hold of) would call for a particularly close discussion. Perhaps it would also be very opportune to reproduce in small print, if only fragmentarily, two or three of the bona fide texts recently published on surrealism - I'm thinking of a lecture by [Léon] Pierre-Quint reproduced in Confluences, of a statement by Blanchot that I've heard about. What do you think about this? I will insist that some of our friends send you some unpublished drawings... "In 1945, only one issue of the review Vrille was published, financed by Édouard de Rouvre and bringing together the great names of Surrealism. The issue
