17th CENTURY FRENCH ECOLE The meal at Simon's... - Lot 99 - Osenat
17th CENTURY FRENCH ECOLE The meal at Simon's Pen drawing on paper pasted on a large sheet of paper affixed to cardboard. Illegible signature. After the engraving representing the famous painting by Pierre-Hubert Subleyras (1699-1749) "Le repas chez Simon". 24 x 61 cm (later highlights, wear) The painting now in the Louvre was commissioned by the Canons of the Lateran for the refectory of the convent of Asti, near Turin in Italy. The scene depicts Christ's meal at Simon's, during which Mary Magdalene, a sinful woman, rushed to Christ's feet to pay homage by washing his feet. Faced with the indignation of the guests, who did not understand why Christ accepted the homage of a woman of ill repute, Christ showed charity and called on everyone to forgive the faults committed. Subleyras chose to depict the precise moment when Christ, situated on the left of the composition, lets Mary Magdalene wash his feet.
