VERY RARE BRUSSELS PANEL ( FLANDERS) FROM... - Lot 42 - Osenat
VERY RARE BRUSSELS PANEL ( FLANDERS) FROM THE END OF THE XVIE-DEBUT OF THE XVIIE SIECLES Joseph predicting to Vespasian that he will be proclaimed Emperor In silk, gold and silver paillons and wool. Very beautiful and rare panel of the Royal Manufactures of the city of Brussels, it is part of a series of hangings having for subject the Judaic wars inspired by a song of gestures, very popular since the XIIth century, known under the title of The revenge of our Lord. It was with the Renaissance that this story was again brought up to date. The tapestry panel shows Vespasian with Joseph ben Matityahu (son of Matthatias the Priest), better known as Flavius Josephus, at his feet, after the fall of the city of Jotapata in Galilee in the year 67. Indeed, taken prisoner by the Romans, he risked the cruel fate of defeated generals, but he then predicted to his conqueror, Vespasian, that he would become emperor, so the latter allowed him a period of grace. In 69, the prediction came true: Vespasian ascended the throne. Joseph was released and granted Roman citizenship and his tria nomina (Roman name) became Titus Flavius Josephus, in honour of his patrons. Flavius Josephus was spelled by Jean Hardouin to distinguish him from Saint Joseph. Mark of the weaver on the right braid Monogram of Hans Mattens, active in Brussels from 1590, died in 1633 305 x 327 cm (remarkable freshness of colors and beautiful polychromy, maintenance restorations)
