Carl Wilhelm HÜBNER (1814-1879) Scène villageoise Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1865 lower right 120 x 100 cm With frame : 156 x 133 cm Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1865 lower right, 47.2 x 39.3 in, with frame 61.4 x 52.3 in Provenance : This work was bought by the Third Baron Jean Gérard Isnard at the end of the XIXth century, and has remained in the descendants until today This painting was kept at the Château Isnard in Grasse until 1974, when the building was destroyed, and then transferred to the Isnard country house in Saint-Sébastien Aups. Iconography : German symbolist painter, Carl HÜBNER does not represent a mourning scene contrary to appearances. The presence of characters in traditional Polish costumes symbolically highlights the omnipotence of Prussia and its hegemony over the dominated peoples, particularly the Poles. The artist was accustomed to subtly denouncing social conflicts, as evidenced by his best-known work, The Weavers of Silesia, painted in 1844.
