PERAK Woman's headdress symbolizing the cobra. Turquoise tex - Lot 120
PERAK Woman's headdress symbolizing the cobra. Turquoise textile and yak wool. Laddak, Tibet. Note: These headdresses from Ladakh, called perak/peyrak, or "turquoise line", bear witness to influences from the West, from neighbouring Kashmir and Baltistan, but also from Iran and Central Asia. Thus, if the choice of turquoise inscribes them in the Tibetan cultural area where this stone, feminine head ornament par excellence, represents beauty, wealth and vital force, the term to name it testifies to the commercial relations of Ladakh with Kashmir and, beyond, Iran. Indeed, the most prized stones came from the turquoise mines of Nishapur. In the whole area of Tibetan culture (5800 000 km²), turquoise adorns all the jewels worn by Tibetans, men and women, it is worn in the ear, in a ring or a necklace, set on reliquary boxes made of worked silver, or sewn on headdresses. Set in gold or silver, combined with amber, coral, carnelian or fine pearls, the variety of combinations it allows is infinite. A stone of luck and good luck, placed second in the hierarchy of precious materials, after gold but before silver and coral, it is considered as a beautiful ornament but also as the symbol and guarantor of the soul. A living stone, sensitive to temperature changes, liable to break or die, it shares this destiny with man, whose vitality it evokes, then whose disappearance. Emblem of the woman, ostentatious sign of wealth, object of envy and jealousy, this headdress is worn today only on the occasion of weddings, monastic celebrations and, above all, cultural and tourist shows.
