Aumasson, Joseph Savina, l'art et le métier, cat. exp. Musée de Saint-Brieuc, November 1988-January 1989, pp. 23, 37 and 47 (third research of 1964, first research of 1947, third research of 1964 sculpted and pastel study of 1964, illustrated). - R. Aujame and F. de Franclieu, Fondation Le Corbusier, Le Corbusier / Savina, dessins et sculptures, Editions Philippe Sers, Paris, 1984, pp. 46 and 48 (two other illustrated preparatory drawings) and p. 95, nos. 44, 45 and 45 bis (the second and third research sculptures, illustrated on pp. 47 and 49) NOTICE: Savina made the first sculpted version of Ubu in 1947, which Le Corbusier rejected for lack of fidelity to his original drawing. After a second, more faithful attempt at polychromy, Le Corbusier was satisfied, and later versions were executed, the most recent in 1964. The inspiration is linked to Alfred Jarry's 1896 play and also involves the surrealist poet Blaise Cendrars to whom Le Corbusier refers. "About this 'allusion to Alfred Jarry's comedy - Ubu Roi - a buffoonish caricature of bourgeois stupidity', [Le Corbusier] would write that it was 'born without any premeditation, from the defeat of 1940 and baptized only in 1944'" (quoted in Joseph Savina, l'art et le métier, cat. exp. Musée de Saint-Brieuc, November 1988-January 1989, p. 37).
