Tapestry from La Marche (France) from the middle of the 16th - Lot 231
Tapestry from La Marche (France) from the middle of the 16th century, belonging to a suite of tapestry hangings with the story of Hester as its subject. The cartoons of this suite seem to be related to the work of the French engraver Etienne Delaune (1518-1583), as well as to the drawings of the Flemish J. Stradanus (1523-1605). Similar tapestries were also woven in Flanders and Holland. Our panel has inscriptions naming the characters represented, such as Vashtiy, the first wife of King Ahasuerus, himself represented on the left of the panel. The border was brought back in the 19th century. The presence of the inscriptions and their type suggest that the hanging may have been originally woven for a Yiddish-speaking notable. 285 x 315 cm
